All American Football - The Cabinet

Well, it took a little longer than expected to get this into the work room. I had to do some major disassembly before I could move it into the basement. I fels like it weighs a ton! I didn’t feel like putting it back together simply for the purpose of pictures, so the pictures are of the cabinet in a disassembled state.

The cabinet is in worse shape than I initially thought, although it’s not too bad. The black vinyl covering most of the exposed outside areas of the cabinet is peeling in several places. I’m going to remove the vinyl, sand down the sides and repaint the cabinet black. This is a much cheaper alternative than paying $5.00 a foot for 40″ wide vinyl. Doing the math, I would need at least 18 feet of vinyl, costing around $90.00, which is more than I’m willing to spend.

A couple of corners are damaged on the front of the cabinet and I will be repairing those. I’m going to try a different approach this time rather than bondo. I’m going to use a product called Rock Hard Water Putty. It’s been recommended as another alternative and since these corners don’t need total rebuilds, I’m going to give it a shot. It’s a powder that you mix with water and apply as you would any other type of putty.

Finally, the control panel overlay is going to be replaced. There are no reproduction control panels available so I’m going to vectorize my own in Adobe Illustrator and have it printed and laminated. With all of the being said, I present the cabinet:

Cabinet Front Cabinet Back Left Side
Right Side Monitor Power Supply & Boards
Control Panel Deflection Board

I’ll be starting with the stripping of the vinyl and then moving to the cabinet repair. Stay tuned for futher updates.
