As mentioned yesterday, here is my latest addition to the arcade game collection. It’s a game called All American Football, manufactured by Leland in 1989. It’s a four player dedicated upright machine in the original cabinet (not converted). You can read more specifics of the game on the Killer List of Video Games site. The machine pictured to the left is not my machine, it’s a stock image from KLOV.
Here’s the good news…the game powers up and seems to play ok, meaning the boardset is good. The bad news, the monitor needs a cap kit. The colors are off and the image “folds” in the middle. I already have the cap kit, so it’s just a matter of installing it and seeing if it corrects the problems. I haven’t tried all four joysticks but the up directional on one of them is not working. I haven’t torn into the machine yet, so it may just be a matter of a loose wire.
The cabinet is in decent shape but has it’s fair share of dings. It’s covered in black vinyl which is starting to peel in a number of places. If I decide to restore the cabinet, I’ll probably remove the vinyl, prime it and repaint it black. There are sources for replacment vinyl but it’s expensive and I’m not going to throw a whole lot of money into this cabinet as I’d never recover the costs.
The control panel graphic has seen better days. It’s dirty and the lower right hand corner has peeled away. If I decide to restore the machine, I’ll have to vectorize a new control panel overlay and find someplace to have it printed and laminated.
The machine is heavy so I’m going to do a little disassembly before I even attempt to move it into the basement workshop. I still haven’t decided what I want to do with the machine. Unfortunately, the control panel is huge which doesn’t really make this cabinet conductive for a multicade or jamma machine.
I did play the game for about 5 minutes last night. Sure the graphics are a little crude, but overall, it’s not too bad. The passing and kicking controls are pretty intuitive and make the game a bit challenging. I even managed to score a touchdown, but missed the field goal. As usual, I’ll be setting up a dedicated page on the website for this machine and will keep you updated on my decisions/progress. I have a busy weekend ahead of me, so there may not be any pictures of my actual machine until early next week.
