Wow, I didn’t realize that it has been over a year since my last post. How time flies. I may be typing all of this in vain, as I’m not sure anyone comes around anymore. Oh well! Unfortunately, I haven’t done much with the arcade games in the last year. However, the last few months, I’ve been going full speed on my basement remodel. I’ve finished the subfloor; hung, taped and mudded the drywall; primed the drywall and shot texture onto the ceiling. This weekend I’ll be painting the walls and the following weekend, I’ll start putting down about 670 square feet of flooring. After considering 18″ or 24″ tiles, I’ve decided to put this down. I’ll have to install vinyl leg levelers on all my games but it should provide a durable and good looking finish.

So onto some pictures of the basement remodel. The first series of pictures is the drywall hung, prior to taping and mudding. Click on each image for a larger version:

The plans for the bar area have changed slightly since the original design (I’ve included a picture of the original design below for reference). Instead of a full bar, which I felt would consume far too much floor space, I’m simply going to do a wall of cabinets and a 8′ countertop between the opening for the refrigerator and opening between the two rooms. What is depicted as the “bar back” in the image will be the only cabinets going in, but it will extend almost to the opening. The freezer will be going into the storage room once all my games are pulled out of it. Sorry these photos are a little lower quality, I took them with my phone, but here is the area taped, sanded and primed:

This last weekend we shot a knock-down texture on the ceiling. It’s not my favorite texture in the world, but it matches what is in the rest of the house. It was difficult to get pictures of it but you get the idea:

There are four 6 1/2″ ceiling speakers. One pair in the bar and TV area and the other pair in the game area. The speakers are hooked to my main stereo and each pair can be turned on or off independently. I also have an old Turtle Beach Audiotron that streams all of my mp3 files from a NAS drive through my receiver. The Audiotron can be controlled remotely via my iPad. I wish they still made the Audiotron, the thing is a tank! I opted not to do a surround sound setup. The TV upstairs has surround sound so that will have to suffice. I’m ready to get this project done. I haven’t played a game in months and am eager to restore the Centiped cabinet and then start on DK and DK Jr. I hope to have everything complete by mid-February. As always, you can view the entire gallery of pictures from my basement remodel here. Stay tuned….

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything of significance. Essentially, that means I haven’t been doing any work. No work on the arcade collection and no work on my basement remodel. The basement remodel was intended to be a winter project. Unfortunately, I didn’t get as much done last winter as planned. Most of the framing was completed and a little bit of insulation work, but that’s about it.

I started working on the basement again in October and have made pretty good progress. New recessed lights have been installed to replace the hideous ceiling fans that the previous owner had installed. I still need to run the wiring from the switches to the lights. Most of the insulation has been put into place. All of the wiring to the outlets is in place as well as Cat-5 cable and cable for the satellite system.

I decided to put down a sub-floor just to eliminate the feeling of being in a basement. I found a product locally which is a 24 millimeter membrane with dimples that you place on the concrete. It acts as a moisture barrier and air gap and allows the concrete to breathe. On top of the membrane, you lay normal plywood just like you would any other sub-floor. This is the product I purchased. Because of a lack of storage space, I can only work on half of the flooring at any given time. I have half complete. I’ll need to move games and a few other items around to finish the other half. Before I move the games around, I’m going to go ahead and install the drywall on the half with the sub-floor. If mother nature cooperates, I’ll hopefully be picking up a load of drywall on my way home from work tonight. Unfortunately, it’s supposed to start raining and snowing sometime today. I’ll have some updated pictures after the weekend.

On the arcade front, I really haven’t done anything but I have been stockpiling parts in hopes of resuming some projects after the basement work progresses. Here’s what I have lined up, in order of priority:

Centipede

I have all of the parts to completely restore this cabinet. Phoenix Arcade had a Thanksgiving sale on Centipede side art, so I picked up a set. I picked up a marquee from a fellow collector. Another collector was parting out a Centipede so I grabbed his speaker & light assembly to replace the one from mine that was covered in mouse excrement. Finally, I have a new trackball and control panel overlay ready to be installed. The only thing this game really needs is a new monitor tube. I’ve been looking, but no luck yet. Centipede will be getting a complete restoration similar to my Dig Dug restoration.

Donkey Kong

This one will also be getting a full restoration. I still have the new control panel & joystick that I received last Christmas. It still hasn’t been installed. I have cap kits for both the monitor and audio board to install. I have two NOS coin mechs for the coin door. All I really need for this one is the side art. I’m considering a new new monitor bezel and marquee as well.

Donkey Kong Jr

A full restoration lies ahead for this Donkey Kong cabinet, converted to Jr. I really don’t have any parts for this yet, but do have a high score save kit to install on the board. It will be getting a new coat of paint in Jr orange, new marquee, control panel, bezel and side art.

Golden Tee Conversion

This one will get the hole repaired where the bill changer used to be, as well as a few other minor cabinet repairs, and be good to go.

Missile Command

Nothing major with this one. I’ve got a multigame kit to install on the board which allows you to play both Missile Command and Super Missile Attack. It saves high scores too!

That’s all for now. Hopefully some work actually gets accomplished this year! Finally, hats off to Jeff Rothe at Rotheblog for the new, free WordPress theme. I’m diggin’ it!

Some of you may remember my post from November, detailing the removal of the old carpeting which had been glued to the concrete floor in my unfinished basement. After many weekends, the carpet and stubborn adhesive has finally been removed. The plan is to turn a portion of the unfinished basement into a family room / bar / game room. I’ve spent many nights planning the initial design and layout in Visio and think I’ve come up with a viable plan, although some of it needs some explanation. Click on the thumbnail below for a larger image:

The staircase, at the upper left, essentially splits the unfinished portion, which will be used for storage and mechanicals, from the portion that will become finished. The wall with the door, at the upper right, already exists but the drywall will be removed and some minor modifications made. The dotted rectangle running vertically down the middle is a steel beam that exists in the room. The gray portion of that same beam is where a 2×6 wall will be constructed.

I initially wanted to place the bar in the lower right hand corner. The plan is to have a sink in the bar which meant I needed to run a drain line to the unfinished portion of the basement. With the bar placement as shown, I can run the plumbing through the 2×6 wall, which I will construct to span about 1/2 the length of the steel beam, underneath the stairwell and to the existing stubbed in plumbing fairly easily. There is also a bathroom directly above this location so all I need to do is drop the water lines down the 2×6 wall. Finally, there will be a nook here, so I can build the full size refrigerator into the bar and it will sit even with the bar back instead of sticking out three feet.

The lower left hand corner will be the television / seating area. With the bar in its present location, it will also be possible to sit at the bar and watch the television. The remainder of the room, to the right of the steel beam will all be for the games. While my collection isn’t big enough to fill it, there’s plenty of room to add the foosball table and plenty more games in the future. Phase 2 will include a bathroom off the door by the MAME cabinet.

With the initial plan drawn out and the “boss” giving her approval, it was time to get to work! With my $10 coupon in hand, I headed to Lowe’s and loaded up on lumber. As of right now, I’ve completed the framing on two of the three exterior walls. In the plan above, the bottom wall and right hand wall are finished. Hopefully by this weekend all of the framing will be complete and it will be on to wiring and insulation.

As you’ll notice in the fourth picture, all of the games are covered in plastic to keep the dust off of them. I need to move them all as they are standing in front of the next wall to frame. The cheesy ceiling fans are going and the freezer will be relocated to the storage side of the basement. The foosball table, which is a dust magnet right now and needs to be covered with plastic, will be going on the game side of the finished basement. I have no idea where the basketball game is going…hopefully not in the finished basement!

To help invision the space a bit better, from picture 1 to 6, you are starting in the upper right corner of the plan and panning 360 degrees to your right. That’s all for now. I’ll keep updating as progress is made. As you can see, for the next few months there won’t be any game related work happening.

There hasn’t been much progress with the arcade restorations as of late. I’ve started a new project which has been eating up most of my free time. This new project is somewhat arcade related as I’ve started to finish my unfinished basement. The new, finished space will include a family/TV room, a wet bar and an area specifically for the arcade games.

The previous owners had painted the foundation walls white and put down some berber carpet but not much else had been done. I wasn’t fond of the carpet so before any construction could begin, I decided to remove it. Unfortunately, the carpet was glued to the concrete floor. I initially thought it might just be edge glued, but no such luck. Every square inch of the carpet is glued to the floor.

The quest to remove the carpet adhesive began. My attempts to scrape it up dry did not go over well. I then decided to mop water on sections and allow it to sit for about 20 minutes. The adhesive came up much easier and with two or three passes it was removed. Below are some before and after shots for comparision:

Whoever put the carpet down also put some floor leveler down, although I’m not sure why as it didn’t level the floor. You can see the leveler in the first picture towards the top. It’s the area where the adhesive appears to be thicker. They didn’t allow the leveler to completely cure before putting down the carpet adhesive so the two are now permanently bonded. To remove the adhesive in these areas, I have to chip all of the floor leveler off of the floor as well (water doesn’t help soften it).

Three weekends of work and I have about half the floor done. I’m working on a plan in Visio but haven’t finalized anything yet. I’ll continue to post project updates and the finalized plan here and hopefully will be able to fit in a little work on games as well. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
